There is something I love about a fashion season that makes secondhand shopping feel smarter instead of simply cheaper.
Fall 2026 is one of those seasons. The strongest ideas are not about looking brand new from head to toe. They are about personality, texture, classic pieces worn differently, vintage-feeling jewelry, interesting jackets, animal print in smaller doses, and a little evening glamour.
In other words: this is thrift-store territory.
If you are shopping secondhand this fall, these are the seven categories I would look at first—not because you need every trend, but because each one gives you a good chance of finding something with more character than the brand-new version.
ThredUp’s 2026 Resale Report projects the global secondhand apparel market to reach $393 billion by 2030 and says it is growing about twice as fast as the overall apparel market. That matters because more shoppers are treating resale as a first stop—not an afterthought.
Brooches, Pearls & Jewelry That Actually Says Something
Fall 2026 is making room for accessories with personality again. Brooches, pearls, charm-style jewelry, rhinestones and unusual statement pieces are doing more than “finishing” an outfit—they are becoming the part people notice first.
This is one category I would almost always check secondhand before buying new. Older costume jewelry often has scale, detail, weight and a little weirdness that makes it more interesting.

The Piece That Looks Better With a Little Life in It
Suede jackets are one of Fall 2026’s strongest outerwear stories, and leather, shearling, worn-in denim and textured bags all fit the same mood. This is where resale can be better than new because good texture often improves with age.
I would look for olive, chocolate, cognac, camel, mushroom and deep brown—colors that already feel at home in a fall wardrobe.
- Check seams, corners and straps before worrying about small surface creasing.
- Look for real texture and patina, not damage.
- Do not overlook bags with a great body but an ordinary strap—you can change the strap and completely change the look.
Classic, Pretty—and Not Too Precious
One of the best Fall 2026 ideas is what Vogue is calling the “Updated Lady”: pearls, tailored jackets, top-handle bags, pencil skirts and polished pieces worn in a way that feels relaxed instead of costume-y.
That is exactly how I like vintage and resale fashion to work. The pearl bracelet does not need a cocktail dress. Put it with denim. The structured handbag does not need a suit. Carry it with a sweater and loafers.

Stop Asking Which Decade It Came From First
Fashion is pulling freely from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s right now, which is good news for thrift shoppers. The point is not to dress head-to-toe in a single decade. It is to find the piece that still looks good and bring it forward.
A vintage blouse with current jeans. A 1990s shoulder bag with a simple knit. A retro jacket with clean trousers. Old does not have to look old-fashioned.
Barn Jackets, Military Details & Outerwear With a Point of View
Barn jackets remain a major transitional staple, while military jackets are back with stand collars, epaulets, metal buttons and sharper cuts. These are especially good thrift targets because older versions often have the details current designers are trying to recreate.
I would check men’s and women’s racks. A slightly oversized utility or military jacket can be more useful than a perfectly fitted one.
- Look for corduroy collars, sturdy cotton, waxed finishes, metal buttons and useful pockets.
- Do not be afraid of men’s sizing if the shoulders work.
- A jacket can be the whole outfit—keep everything underneath it simple.

A Little Leopard Goes a Long Way
Animal print is part of Fall 2026’s personality-piece mood, but you do not have to wear a full leopard coat to use it. A bag strap, scarf, shoe, belt or small accessory gives a simple outfit just enough energy.
This is also a smart secondhand category because animal print cycles in and out constantly. There is usually plenty of it already in circulation.
Rhinestones, Velvet, Brocade & Art Deco Energy
Fall 2026 is also bringing back a more refined kind of evening dressing: Art Deco references, velvet, embellished jackets, crystals and pieces that sparkle without feeling overly fussy.
This may be my favorite place to thrift because old costume jewelry and evening accessories can make a basic outfit feel special without requiring an entirely “special occasion” wardrobe.
- Rhinestone earrings with a black sweater.
- A metallic or beaded evening bag with denim.
- Velvet or brocade used as one piece, not the whole look.
- Vintage sparkle in daylight—because why save it?

The Brooch Moment
Personality jewelry is one of the easiest ways to make what you already own feel new.
Shop Brooches & Jewelry →Shop the Trend. Keep the Personality.
The best part of secondhand shopping is that you can participate in a trend without looking like you bought the exact same outfit everyone else did.
Use the trend as a clue. Then find the version that feels like you—the older bag, the strange brooch, the jacket with better buttons, the pearls that have already had a life.
That is the kind of fall wardrobe I want: current, but collected.
